Travel media ferry along BC's coast

In September, the travel media relations team hosted two successful media trips, in partnership with Northern BC Tourism, Tourism Vancouver Island and Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism, all exploring BC’s coastline via ferry and boat.

The first trip began in Prince Rupert, where highlights included exploring historic cannery sites by jet boat, spotting a mama grizzly and her two cubs along the Khutzeymateen Inlet, witnessing a dozen humpback whales bubble feeding, and devouring a five-course sushi dinner compliments Chef Dai of Fukasaku. Leaving Prince Rupert, the group sailed through the iconic Inside Passage to Port Hardy, where the second group was just beginning their journey.  They spotted marine wildlife by kayak in the Broughton Archipelago, and pulled up alongside grizzly bears in Sea Wolf Adventures’ new boat, all while learning about the cultural significance of the area.  After a night of swapping stories over seafood in Telegraph Cove, the first group headed home, leaving the second group to sail into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, onboard BC Ferries.  Arriving in Bella Coola, the group tried more wildlife viewing on a scenic river drift in Tweedsmuir Park, and a jet boat tour featuring history, hanging glaciers, wildlife, waterfalls and a dip in a natural fjord-side hot spring. Outlets represented were News Corp Escape Travel (Australia), Canadian Geographic, Frommers, Marie Claire Magazine (Australia), Lonely Planet, Western Living, Outside and Men’s Journal.

We teamed up with BC’s destination resorts and HeliCat Canada to connect with key ski media to nurture relationships and share updates, ultimately resulting in editorial coverage about BC ski experiences. The first event of the year took place in Boulder, Colorado, where many of the US ski and outdoor publications are based (Ski Magazine, Snowboard Magazine, Freeskier Magazine, Mountain Magazine, etc). BC partners with Travel Alberta on this event, creating a strong western Canada message. The second ski event took place October 25th in Toronto, just prior to the city’s annual consumer ski show. This event is attended by many of the key national publications, as well as Canada’s ski-specific outlets. Destination BC wrapped up the final ski event in Seattle, meeting with ski, lifestyle and influencer media based in the greater Washington area.

Travel media team crosses the country to promote BC

Destination BC’s travel media team has been covering Canada’s cities to pitch BC stories. Sabrina Robson attended the Travel Media Association of Canada (TMAC) Conference in Quebec City earlier this month. She pitched BC story ideas in a series of one-on-one appointments and participated in networking opportunities. Destination BC and partners also travelled to Toronto to share story ideas with some of the country’s top editors, broadcasters, and freelancers, meeting with over 60 media in four jam-packed days. In May, our team and partners hosted the annual Calgary Media Dinner for 35 journalists.

BC hits the small screen—at home and in Australia

Destination British Columbia’s Travel Media team and our industry partners played a key role in assisting three major broadcasters in the past several months. The end result was that stunning visuals of our province ran in Canada on the Amazing Race—and in Australia on both the Today Show and Sunrise, Australia’s top breakfast show.

Weather presenter Edwina Bartholomew of the popular Australian Sunrise morning show broadcasts from beautiful Vancouver.

Amazing Race Canada blazed a trail through British Columbia this summer. This is the third time that the wildly popular show has featured British Columbia, and this round, the producers loved our Travel Media pitches that featured equal measures of challenge and beauty in Penticton/Summerland/Osoyoos and Vancouver/Whistler.  Approximately 2.6 million viewers tuned in to watch contestants negotiate challenges at Covert Farms, Summerland Waterfront Resort, Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad, Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre, D’Angelo Estate Winery, Whistler Blackcomb, Nicklaus North Golf Course and Bearfoot Bistro. In all, BC was featured in two episodes, including the finale.

Our team also worked closely with our Australia office to bring the Today Show to BC. A live spot from the nationally broadcast program displayed BC to more than half a million viewers in prime time. The crew, who teamed up with Scenic Tours, filmed in Victoria at The Fairmont Empress in September. As an added bonus, the Today Show team gave British Columbia increased exposure in key social media channels.

Our Australian and Vancouver-based Travel Media Relations teams also joined forces with Tourism Vancouver to bring Sunrise, Australia's number one breakfast show, to the city. The show’s weather segment put our province in the spotlight—and it was a vast and influential reach, thanks to their 2.9- million viewers a week, plus an additional one million online and 1.3 million on their social media channels. In all, the program travelled to five countries in five days and broadcasted live; Vancouver played a starring role on Day 4. The broadcast was also linked to Flight Centre, who rolled out a $1M campaign featuring packaged and pricing for the destinations highlighted in the show.

Each year, Destination BC plans and executes marketing activities to motivate potential travelers to consider, plan and book a BC vacation. Our 2016-2017 Global Marketing Activities Calendar provides a high-level view into our current and planned activities by market. For more information on how you can benefit from or participate in these activities, please contact us.
