The Value of Tourism in BC Report (2017) Now Available 

Published annually, the Value of Tourism in British Columbia takes a deep dive into the economic value the tourism industry contributes to the province. The publication summarizes 10 years of tourism revenue, gross domestic product, and business and employment data. Visitor volume and associated expenditures by both domestic and international markets of origin are also covered.

Destination BC's Co-operative Marketing Partnerships Program 

Now entering its fourth year, the Co-Op Program continues to align BC’s tourism industry in innovative ways to raise tourism revenue across the province. Awarded on a competitive application basis, the program encourages industry partnerships in order to leverage funding and achieve joint marketing goals. Some minor updates were made to the 2020/21 guidelines and application form. Apply by November 30, 2019.

ITBC and TVI Sign Memorandum of Understanding

At Tourism Vancouver Island's (TVI) annual conference this month, Indigenous Tourism BC (ITBC) and TVI signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost the island's Indigenous tourism. The agreement defines a collaborative approach to equipping Indigenous communities with the necessary skills and resources to meet the growing demand for authentic cultural experiences. With support from Destination BC, the Memorandum includes the creation an Indigenous tourism specialist position shared by TVI and ITBC.

Earlier this month, Destination BC participated in the World Winter Sports Expo (WWSE) in Beijing alongside Destination Canada, Travel Alberta, and BC winter/ski partners. The four-day expo was a fantastic way to inspire Chinese travellers to discover BC's ski and winter activities, and we are delighted to be taking home the Excellent Exhibitors Award for set design and exhibit.

Bluewater Adventure to the Great Bear Rainforest

Media coverage out of Germany this month included online and print coverage in Süddeutsche Zeitunga German national daily. Focused on the Great Bear Rainforest, the piece describes its unique and precious ecosystem, perfect for travellers who want to get close to nature, see grizzly bears, Kermode bears, and other wildlife. With support from Destination BC, the journalist experienced the adventure aboard Bluewater Adventures, a carbon neutral tour operator.

Whistler Voted Best International Ski Resort by Australian Families

Out & About with Kids Magazine in Australia has revealed Whistler Blackcomb as the Best International Ski Destination for Families. More than 120,000 votes across 44 categories were counted in the this year's Readers' Choice Awards. Whistler was chosen ahead of finalists, which included The Remarkables (NZ), Hokkaido (Japan), as well as Aspen and Lake Tahoe (USA). The full list of winners and finalists can be viewed online and in the October edition of the magazine.

Another Award for Destination BC-sponsored GBR IMAX Film

Shortly after taking home a 2019 Giant Screen Cinema Association Achievement award, the Great Bear Rainforest won the Jackson Wild Best Engaging Youth Film award. The Jackson Wild awards recognize excellence and innovation in science and nature storytelling, with this particular one being awarded to the film that most effectively inspires an appreciation of the natural world among young people in the 6-12 age group.

August International Visitor Arrivals up 7% (YOY)

International Visitor Arrivals were up 7% in August driven by continued growth out of the US. Total US arrivals to BC are up 5.2% year-to-date, putting us on track for a record year.

BC's Emergency Program Act Modernization

Emergency Management BC (EMBC) is modernizing the Emergency Program Act (EPA) to support more effective management of emergencies in BC. The Province is seeking input from its many emergency management partners and the public on the recently released discussion paper, which explains the need for new legislation and outlines the proposed policy direction. We encourage all tourism partners to provide feedback by 4PM on January 31, 2020.

Nanaimo Airport is showing dedication to accommodating people with disabilities through the Blue Navigator Ambassadors program. Easily identifiable ambassadors in blue vests provide directions and information in the Airport Terminal Building, offering personalized assistance to travellers. The terminal building floormap, available online, also helps prepare travellers for what they can expect on arrival.
