Sustainable Tourism Destination Assessment

In 2021, the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains (VCM) Tourism Region partnered with GreenStep Solutions to complete a Sustainable Tourism Destination Assessment. This globally recognized assessment, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, provided a baseline for VCM’s first Sustainability Action Plan.

To track progress and guide future efforts, it is recommended to reassess every three years. VCM completed its reassessment in June 2025.

Reassessment helps:

• Measure progress since 2021
• Identify gaps and opportunities
• Align efforts across the region
• Avoid duplication and maximize resources

The assessment evaluates sustainability across five key areas:

• Social well-being
• Economic resilience
• Cultural preservation
• Natural and environmental sustainability
• Destination management

The VCM Sustainability Council is now reviewing the 2025 results and updating priorities for the 2025–26 period to continue advancing sustainable tourism across the region.
