Destination BC’s DEIA Framework

Destination BC is committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA).

Our framework explains how we embed these foundational principles into our internal systems, decisions, and ways of working as a provincial Crown corporation. It reflects a shift from a time‑bound strategy to a durable, organization‑wide framework focused on accountability, consistency, and stewardship over time.

From Commitment to Consistency

Our Areas of Focus

These areas of focus describe where diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are embedded into Destination BC’s day‑to‑day work as standard ways of operating. They reflect shared intent and accountability, while recognizing that application will vary based on function, influence, and context.

A Culture of Belonging

A strong culture of belonging enables people to contribute fully, work effectively across differences, and make better decisions together.

When employees feel seen, respected, and psychologically safe, lived experiences inform leadership and collaboration — strengthening organizational culture, accountability, and impact.

Barrier Free and Inclusive Policies, Processes, and Programs

Policies, processes, and programs shape who can participate, how work gets done, and whether access is experienced as fair and consistent.

Applying equity, accessibility, and intersectional lenses to these systems helps prevent barriers before they arise and supports meaningful participation for employees, partners, and communities.

An Inclusive and Accessible Tourism Industry

Tourism experiences shape how people feel welcomed, respected, and able to participate. Supporting an inclusive and accessible tourism industry helps ensure that British Columbia is experienced as safe, respectful, and welcoming by visitors and by the communities who host them.

How We Use the Framework

Truth & Reconciliation

Destination BC’s DEIA framework builds on our previous equity and inclusion efforts and reflects a shift from a time‑bound strategy to a long‑term, embedded approach. It guides how diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility are integrated into internal systems, decision‑making, and ways of working over time, ensuring policies, processes, and programs are fair, accessible, and inclusive.

Within our Corporate Strategy, these principles act as anchors that support accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.

Our DEIA framework is embedded into how Destination BC plans, makes decisions, and delivers our work. Rather than operating as stand‑alone initiatives, the framework provides a shared lens that guides everyday actions across our organization.

The framework informs decisions related to programs, partnerships, and ways of working, helping teams consider potential barriers and inclusion impacts early and consistently. It supports collaboration with communities that have experienced systemic barriers and ensures diverse perspectives inform how work is designed and delivered.

Progress is monitored at a systems level, and used to highlight areas of focus and continuous improvement. The framework is intentionally adaptive and is refined over time based on feedback, emerging practices, and evolving community needs.

Accessibility is a legal and operational responsibility under the Accessible BC Act. This framework functions as Destination BC’s Accessibility Plan and outlines how the organization identifies, removes, and prevents barriers for employees and the public.

In alignment with the Act, Destination BC maintains an Accessibility & Inclusion Committee, provides a public feedback mechanism, and regularly reviews and updates its accessibility planning. Accessibility‑related goals and indicators within the framework support equitable access and accountability and are reviewed at least every three years.

Destination BC’s DEIA framework and Truth & Reconciliation Commitments are distinct in leadership, accountability, and governance, and respond to different responsibilities.

Our Truth & Reconciliation Commitments are published as a separate, Indigenous‑led, organization‑wide framework. Reconciliation requires a distinctions‑based, relationship‑centred approach that honours Indigenous self‑determination, rights, languages, and protocols and therefore warrants its own governance and accountability.

Together, they inform how Destination BC learns, designs internal systems, and partners responsibly ensuring that our policies, accessibility practices, and decision‑making environments support, rather than undermine, reconciliation‑led work.

Both are grounded in shared principles such as learning and unlearning, respect for lived experience, relationship‑centred engagement, and accountability over time.

An Inclusive Workplace

Destination BC openly embraces diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and we are proud to share that our organization is Rainbow Registered® – an accreditation given to 2SLGBTQI+ friendly spaces. Becoming Rainbow Registered signifies an ongoing commitment and effort to provide a warm and accepting experience for 2SLGBTQI+ employees and consumers through progressive policies and practices.
