Community Destination Stewardship Initiative

Project 4 is designed to establish a provincial network across BC, enhancing the management of climate resiliency and sustainability within community destinations and the broader tourism industry. The program offers comprehensive learning opportunities through workshops, discussions, and other engaging formats, providing communities with essential knowledge and tools. It emphasizes peer-to-peer engagement and the sharing of successes and learnings to promote collaborative growth. Additionally, Project 4 facilitates connections to available resources, programs, and initiatives that support sustainable business practices and encourage community engagement.

This initiative seeks to advance the sustainable development of BC’s tourism industry by offering educational opportunities and facilitating peer connections and discussions. It equips communities with the capabilities to adopt and implement sustainable tourism practices, support partners and local businesses in responding to climate emergencies and preparedness, and reducing the impacts of extreme weather events and long-term climate impacts.

Eligible Participants for Joining the Destination Stewardship Network:

  • Any community or community organization that manages visitors as a destination
  • BC-based Community Destination Management Organizations (CDMOs)
  • Municipal government staff
  • First Nations and First Nation Economic Development Corporations
  • Communities with any level of experience in managing climate change resiliency, adaptation, mitigation, or sustainability in tourism are encouraged to participate, regardless of their experience level

  • Engage with peers across the province to exchange successes and challenges, collaborating on practical sustainability solutions at the community level.
  • The program is offered in multiple formats to accommodate varying schedules, ensuring easy access and convenient participation.

Connect with a growing destination stewardship network of communities striving to be leaders in climate action and resiliency. Participate in a range of learning and capacity building opportunities designed to help you lead your partners and local businesses in climate emergency preparedness and response, sustainability initiatives, and other climate resiliency areas. Engage with other communities to share your accomplishments, initiatives, and experiences. Learn from the successes of others across the province to solve sustainability and climate related challenges in your own community.

Workshop 8: Climate Resilience for CDMOs: Tackling the Challenge of our Century

This final workshop of the Community Destination Stewardship Initiative took place on March 26, 2025 at 10am (PST) for. Through this workshop, participants learned about the multi-faceted aspects of climate resilience and the importance of taking action together, collaborating with each other to tackle the challenge of our century.

Workshop 7: Marketing and Storytelling

This one-hour virtual workshop took place on February 19, 2025, at 10 am PT, featuring guest speaker Robin Russell. It explored the powerful role of marketing and storytelling in advocating for climate resilience in the tourism industry.

Workshop 6: Climate Resilience, Governance, and CDMOs

This workshop took place on January 22, 2025 at 10:00 am PT. It focused on government partnerships within the context of climate resilience in the tourism industry, exploring the critical importance of provincial, regional, and municipal partnerships to enhance climate resilience strategies.

Workshop 5 - Decarbonization and Climate Action

This workshop took place on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024 at 10 am. This session focused on decarbonization and climate action, exploring dynamic strategies and initiatives to help significantly reduce carbon emissions within the tourism industry.

This workshop took place on September 18th, 2024 at 10am. It explored the intersection of climate resilience and Indigenous knowledge by examining the invaluable wisdom and practices that Indigenous communities have developed to adapt and respond to environmental challenges.
